Following on from the lead single Hi-Fidelity ft. Biig Piig, the second single from Lava’s upcoming EP ‘Hi-Fidelity’ titled ‘Don’t Come Back’ explores a toxic relationship that’s hard to escape but feels so nice. Having lead the campaign with a video based music video, we took the opportunity with the second single to expand the visual world we had developed. The single cover depicted a heart shaped chain splitting in half, which I thought was a great visual story. I wanted to expand this story and place Lava into the surreal, desert. I envisaged Lava lost in this sand dune scape, footprints in the sand leading us to them at the top, holding the chain seen in the single artwork. We then see this chain being struck by lightning and shattering, creating an abstract entrancing visual. Lightning strikes hitting on the beat, playing with light and dark, silhouettes.

The process of making the video started with the instrumental intro. I illustrated a vast pink sand desert, with footprints that lead up to us seeing Lava. Lightning strikes from the sky over the desert vista on the intensifying beats. Lava’s hair blowing in the wind. This required layers of illustrations, the lightning strikes, the illumination of the clouds, Lava’s hair. I then transitioned into Blender to create the chain, with shaders to create an anime effect. The lightning required some programming. Much of the physics simulations and lightning with the camera work were experimental, creating a stockpile of footage from which I could weave together an intensifying visual story to mirror the song. Taking this footage into After Effects I animated the lighting and silhouettes to match the beat of the track. The resulting visual draws fans into the world we wanted to create.
